Why I became a wedding celebrant?

Why I became a wedding celebrant?

Why I became a wedding celebrant?

I have worked in the hotel sector for over 20 years and was a wedding and events planner for the last 8 years.

I never really thought too much about weddings until I started in this role and meeting couples who were looking for that perfect venue. Couples were putting their trust and faith in me that I would ensure that their day was just perfect. The longer I was “the wedding planner,” the more I realised that this was something that I wanted to do on another level.

And so I decided to train as a family celebrant and can perform wedding ceremonies, vow renewal ceremonies as well as baby naming ceremonies.

Me

I am mum to two grown up boys. I still don’t think they know what to think of my new found career! Never the less, they think its great and are very encouraging.

I am naturally a very chatty person and love meeting new people. Yes, I know you could be rolling your eyes thinking “I bet she says this to everyone”! But seriously, I genuinely do and I love a good laugh.

I didn’t really know what to expect with the training and thought, “sure, how hard can it be?”.  I have worked in hotels for long enough to !

I quickly realised that the only advantage of my previous career was that I had seen so many wedding ceremonies and that was it! However, the biggest difference to note is that planning a wedding is very different to actually performing a wedding..

Being a Celebrant

There is so much more to being a wedding celebrant. What I really love about what I do is that couples have complete input into the kind of ceremony they would like for their day. I can give suggestions and ideas but ultimately its the couple that have the final say. It is very much about the couple and their lives so I suppose you could say “their wedding their way”!

As I am a celebrant with no affiliation to any particular association. Couples have so many more choices and options as to what they would like in their ceremony compared to before.

The other major plus for me and couples is that I can perform the wedding ceremony anywhere! Even up the side of a mountain  if need be (West of Ireland weather permitting of course). Other solemnisers are restricted and bound by regulations and will not do this.

What is a Celebrant I hear you ask?

What is a Celebrant I hear you ask?

In a nutshell, a wedding celebrant is someone who performs a wedding ceremony. However, it must be said that there are quite a few versions of celebrants available depending on the type and style of service you are looking for.

A civil marriage officiant is a civil officer who officiates a wedding at either a civil office or at a pre qualified location ie hotel.  This generally includes registrars or other civil servants whose role it is to marry couples.

When it comes to religious ceremonies, it’s a given here in Ireland that priests marry couples within their chosen religion.

And finally there are wedding celebrants for symbolic ceremonies, which is the area of work of Cathy Melia Weddings comes into the grand scheme of things. There are many reasons why a couple would want to have a symbolic wedding ceremony and can be for the following reasons:

  • Location restrictions – In Ireland and the UK, you are only allow you to be officially married in certain locations, depending on the country this means outdoor wedding or weddings in unusual locations are not allowed;
  • International restrictions – it can often be difficult, time consuming, or even impossible to be married in another country, especially in the case of destination weddings;
  • Customizability – for both formal civil and religious weddings the structure of the ceremony can by very rigid and lack the space for personal expression.

For all of these reasons and more many couples choose to marry civilly and then have a large ceremony with friends and family utilizing the services of a wedding celebrant for their symbolic ceremonies. This option allows couples to tailor their ceremony and location to their personalities and gives them the freedom to create a day they will always remember.

Announcing the launch of the new website and blog

Announcing the launch of the new website and blog

Cathy Melia Celebrant website is launched

It is with great pleasure that I can finally announce to everyone that Galway’s newest celebrant website and blog is finally up and running.

The plan is post blogs as regularly as possible with anything and everything related to the wedding industry whether it be serious or not. Now, we do not want it all to be work and no play for Cathy. So with that in mind and to provide a little bit of variety, I might even throw in the odd non-work thing or two 🙂

After being involved in the wedding industry for so many years it was no surprise that I decided that the next thing to do was to become a celebrant. After qualifying in 2017 with the Irish Institute of Celebrants, the next step was to put together a website to showcase the services I can offer to people looking for an officiant for their special day. If you are living or visiting Galway or the surrounding areas and are looking for a celebrant to help you plan your wedding day, a vow renewal or even a beautiful baby naming ceremony, then you have come to the right place as I am that person for you.
